Military on highest alert as NPA marks 49th anniversary

MANILA, Dec 26 (Mabuhay) — The Armed Forces of the Philippines will be on the highest alert as communist guerrillas celebrate their 49th founding anniversary on Wednesday, a military spokesman said Tuesday.

Both the military and the New People’s Army are observing a ceasefire for the Christmas holidays. However, the NPA had in the past marked anniversaries with attacks, said AFP spokesman Colonel Edgard Arevalo.

The military also called on the rebels to “reflect deeply” on their past as they mark nearly half a century as an organization.

President Rodrigo Duterte has declared the NPA as a “terrorist” organization after peace negotiations between collapsed earlier this year.(MNS)
