MANILA (Mabuhay) — President Rodrigo Duterte said former defense chief Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro has turned down the chance to fill the same position.
Duterte said during a press conference held early Thursday morning that he met with Teodoro to ask him to fill the top post at the Department of National Defense. Teodoro was defense chief under the Arroyo administration.
The incumbent secretary, Delfin Lorenzana, was considered for an ambassador post. Lorenzana’s last appointment was Defense and Armed Forces attaché to Washington.
Duterte said Lorenzana had asked that his appointment to be an ambassador to the United States be reconsidered.
“Sabi niya Mayor, if you order me to accept the position I will work there. Pero gusto ko lang malaman mo, matanda na ako, mahirap ang buhay sa labas. Yung mingaw (malungkot), if it’s not your country,” he said.
“Ayaw niya (Lorenzana). Ayaw din ni Gibo, ibig sabihin maghanap tayo ng iba,” he said.
Meanwhile, Duterte has reiterated during a press conference that he will pursue the peace talks with the Moro people.
“I am committed to give the Moro people what they promised. Tanggalin muna ang constitutional issues sa BBL,” he said.
He was referring to the BBL or the Bangsamoro Basic Law, which was developed under the previous administration.
Earlier, a government panel has already started initial talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front while Duterte himself has tried to speak with Moro National Liberation Front founder Nur Misuari.
“Sana bago ako umalis sa mundong ito, magkaroon tayo ng lessening of hate,” said Duterte.(MNS)
