MANILA (Mabuhay) — Gerald Anderson marked his birthday on Monday by launching his own foundation, which aims to save lives by training dogs for search and rescue operations.
“Isa lang ang wish ko: tulungan niyo kami dito sa foundation ko,” said Anderson when asked of his birthday wish.
Anderson with his father and brother Kenneth officially launched the Gerald Anderson Foundation Inc. on his 27th birthday.
“Sa simula ang hirap talaga nito pero mas matimbang sa akin ang fulfilment. Sobrang nage-enjoy din ako. Isa siya sa stress-relievers ko. Kapag alam kong may ginagawa akong tama nawawala lahat ang pagod at stress,” said Anderson, a self-confessed dog lover.
“Kaya sinakto ko din sa birthday ko. Sana ay birthday gift niyo na sa akin na tulungan niyo kami dito sa foundation. Hindi lang po sa amin kung hindi madami kayong matutulunganIf you support us we will do our best to save lives and reduce sufferings of Filipino people kapag may calamities. Madami po kayong matutulungan hindi lang kami,” he added.
Anderson said he was motivated by his experience during typhoon Ondoy in 2009, when he braved the floods to save people in need.
“Sobrang sarap ng pakiramdam na nakatulong kami pero at the same time parang may kulang, I could have done more. So ito ‘yung naisip ko. That’s what motivated me to start this foundation and lahat kami, they all have their own experience sa local calamities,” he said.
Right now, the foundation has four dogs including Anderson’s own dog Fredo and his brother’s pet Koda.
Before performing actual search and rescue operations, a dog should undergo training for about six to eight months.
“Kaya namin ito ni-launch kasi we are very, very open to donations, kailangang kailangan po namin ‘yan kasi we are starting from nothing. We need funds, donations, damit, aso, dog food, radios kahit ano tatanggapin namin kasi we are starting from nothing pero mataas ang vision namin. Malayo ang gusto naming marating but we can’t do that without your help,” Anderson said. (MNS)
