MANILA, Mar 4 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III has begun screening candidates for the new Philippine National Police (PNP) chief.

As part of the process, Aquino on Monday interviewed PNP officer-in-charge Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina and Deputy General Marcelo Garbo Jr, chief of the PNP directorial staff, according to Interior Secretary Mar Roxas.

Aquino also asked for the records of the two police officials, Roxas added.

“Ito naman, sa tamang panahon ay pagpapasyahan ng Pangulo. Noong Lunes, ininterview ng Pangulo si Deputy Director General Espina at saka si Garbo. Hiningi niya ang kanilang records,” Roxas told reporters after the turnover ceremony of the PNP-Special Action Force leadership.

Sa tamang panahon ay magpapasya siya,” he added.

Aquino is looking for a replacement for former PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima, who resigned last month after drawing flak for the botched January 25 Mamasapano mission. (MNS)
